Science Technician

Salary                    :             APT & C – Grade 4 (SCP 12 – 14) – £7,374 – £7,675

Hours                    :             20 hours per week, term time only

Working week       :            Start and finish time to be negotiated with successful                                                       candidate – approx 4 hours per day

To commence as soon as possible. This is a permanent post.

We are looking forward to the appointment of an energetic and enthusiastic colleague to join our Science team.     

You will be responsible to the Head of Department and Senior Science Technician in co-ordinating the use and development of practical resources and facilities, including providing guidance and support in meeting the practical requirements of the science curriculum. The curriculum areas include Dual Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The role will also involve clearing equipment from the Science classrooms, ensuring preparations for the next day, supporting all science staff with practical experiments by providing guidance and support. This role may also involve in-class demonstrations and helping some students with their practical work.

Key qualities/skills include:

  • Experience of preparing and handling chemicals
  • Experience of working in laboratory/science environment   
  • An interest in working with young people
  • Organisational skills
  • The ability to work to deadlines and to work under the direction of the Senior Science Technician
  • Knowledge of ordering/maintaining stock
  • Practical skills and ability to carry out repairs/maintenance
  • Ability to use ICT software and packages to support learning
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and pupils both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to provide relevant advice and support to teachers including assisting with classes/demonstrations
  • Able to meet the physical demands of a technician role
  • Knowledge of health and safety in a science environment
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment
  • Able to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality
