Half-term break

Staff Updates

Congratulations to Mrs D Woodrow who has been appointed Deputy Director of English.

Congratulations to Miss J Donnelly and Mr D Hall on being appointed Deputy Headteachers following their outstanding work.

Welcome to Miss Z Jardine, who has joined us as Attendance Administrator.

Unkind Behaviour

As a school we believe that student voice is a critical part of informing our decisions and reviewing systems that we have in place. We completed student voice at the end of half-term 2 around bullying and unkind behaviour, so that we could ensure we have the systems and support in place to ensure this is addressed effectively. Students informed us that these behaviours can include physical contact and can appear to be between friends, but some students believe this to be bullying. We want all our students to feel safe and comfortable in school, so we used this information to refine our approach to educating students about acceptable behaviour and keeping each other safe.

Students received an assembly from Mr Hall at the start of this half-term to explain that unkind words and unkind behaviour (including any physical contact) would result in a B3 unkind behaviour and the reasons for this were explained to students. This was not a change to the behaviour policy as we were just highlighting the importance of kindness and how we demonstrate respect to other individuals.

We have seen this have a significant impact on unkind behaviour as a result of this, with a 50% reduction in unkind behaviour incidents within this half-term. In addition, student voice has shown that this approach has reduced unkind behaviour incidents.  Overall, it has been a very successful strategy because it has improved student understanding of how others may feel about things that are said. It has had positive impact on kindness which is a core value we hold. These messages have been repeated in future assemblies and form time and we will continue to listen to student voice to make any further refinements to our approach to addressing unkind behaviour.

If any Parents/Carers would like any further information about this, Miss Devane will be running drop in sessions on Thursday 12th March from 3.30pm - 4.30pm which can now be booked on Arbor.

Duty Staff wearing Hi Vis

This half-term we have introduced Hi-Vis for staff who are on duty to wear. This makes it easier for students to identify school staff during break/lunch/before and after school if they need to speak to a member of staff.

Student News

Student Leadership Updates

Miss Bell has recently taken over as Student Leadership Coordinator.

Since taking on this role, it has been a pleasure to witness the enthusiasm and commitment our ambassadors and representatives bring to their positions.

It is inspiring to hear students speak confidently about the changes they want to see within our school and community. Moving forward, I hope to create even more opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, particularly our Sports and Physical Health Ambassadors, by supporting staff with activities, leading assemblies on healthy lifestyles, and organising lunchtime sports sessions for their peers.

This half-term, our student leaders and ambassadors have continued to make a positive contribution across the school. The Junior Leadership Team recently held their first meeting with the Senior Leadership Team, confidently representing their peers and sharing ideas on how we can further strengthen our approach to tackling bullying at Royds Hall.

Our Eco Representatives have supported the local community by delivering whole-school donations to the Christmas food drive and are now planning a litter pick and an assembly focused on recycling and responsible waste disposal, with students actively involved in preparing and presenting this important message.

Scholars - Manchester Metropolitan University Visit

Our Year 10 and Year 11 scholars recently enjoyed an inspiring visit to Manchester Metropolitan University.

Students took part in an engaging academic session: ‘Your Critical Voice’, which encouraged them to develop their analytical thinking and confidently express their viewpoints. they also completed a workshop at the Manchester Poetry Library, where they worked alongside university student ambassadors.

They also experienced a guided campus tour, gaining a valuable insight into university life and future study opportunities.

ARP STEM Day

We recently had a fantastic ARP STEM Day delivered by Launchpad STEM, during which ARP students took part in a wide range of engaging, hands-on activities linked to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The day gave pupils the opportunity to explore how these subjects connect to the real world through practical challenges and problem-solving tasks.

Throughout the activities, students developed a range of important skills including communication, teamwork, resilience and independent thinking, while learning how to plan, test ideas and adapt when things didn’t go as expected.

It was wonderful to see students so engaged and proud of their achievements, and the day was a highly positive experience for everyone involved.

Year 10 Speak Out Challenge

90 Year 10 students recently completed the Speak Out Challenge, taking part in workshops designed to build confidence, resilience and communication skills. Led by an expert public speaking trainer, the sessions supported students in developing their ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively.

The programme empowers students to find and use their voice effectively, both in their ongoing education and in future professional settings, with selected students going on to represent the school at the Yorkshire-wide Speak Out Challenge event.
