Staff Leavers

Ms J Vaughan, SEMH Lead Mentor: A huge thank you to our wonderful Ms Vaughan who has been such an asset to the Wellbeing team. We wish her all the best in her retirement!

Mr N Jaggar, Head of Year: After nearly 12 years serving as Head of Year at Royds Hall, Mr Jaggar is moving on to a new chapter. Throughout his time with us, he has worked with thousands of children and their families, serving our community with dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment. A true champion for young people - especially those who find school life more challenging - Mr Jaggar has consistently fought to offer second chances, their chances and yes, sometimes even seventeenth chances. Time and again, his belief in the potential of every student has proved right. While we are sad to see him go, we know he will continue to make a positive impact in the lives of children and families. We wish Nick all the very best in his new role and thank him for everything he has done for Royds Hall.

Miss S McCullough, Teacher of MFL: After almost 5 years as a Teacher of French, Miss McCullough is moving onto a new challenge. Through her time with us she has been dedicated to providing the best for all our students from her amazing classroom displays, to organising French breakfasts for the students. She has made a huge impact in terms of residential trips,  and has introduced some new ones to the school to continue developing the opportunities available to our students. She took over leading the Y7 Bushcraft trips and then, in 2024, the Y7 PGL trip.  Her organisation of these trips and enthusiasm were second to none and she made sure our students made memories which will last a lifetime.  Miss McCullough is now moving to become a subject Leader of MFL closer to home . We will really miss her but know she will be hugely successful in her new role.

Miss S Imran, Educational Teaching Assistant (ARP): It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Miss Imran, who has been such a brilliant part of our team. We've watched her grow into a confident, creative, compassionate professional and we couldn't be prouder to see her stepping into the role of SEND Lead at Kirklees College. We wish her all the best in her next chapter and she will be sorely missed - not just for her skill and dedication, but for her humour her energey and her ability to brighten a room.

Student News

Student Leadership Updates

Our student leaders have been busy this term helping to improve the student experience at Royds Hall.

Year 10 students went through a rigorous application process and 26 students have now been appointed for the next academic year. Now they will begin campaigning for staff and student voices in the Head Student elections.

Our Academy Parliament has been working to promote Uniform Exchange, encouraging parents and students to donate old uniform to be recycled and worn again. They have also helped provide valuable feedback to improving lunchtimes, social times and form times at school.

Our Culture and Diversity Ambassadors have been hard at work organising our Culture Days, featuring a range of cultural dress, cultural films and cultural sports.

Finally, we must say goodbye and a huge thank you to our Year 11 student leaders. After five years of hard work, they leave with the leadership skills and experience to make an impact on the world. Good luck!

Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions

On the 9th & 10th May, 23 Year 9 students undertook their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition.

Students had to work together to navigate along their pre-planned route and camp overnight, all while being self-sufficient for 2 days and 1 night!

The students showed exceptional enthusiasm and determination throughout (even when lost!). The days were filled with walking and pushing themselves physically, whilst the evening was enjoyed by relaxing with their friends (or performing a seemingly endless array of choreographed dances for the teachers).

Hopefully, some students will continue on to complete their Silver in Year 10.

Two weeks later, on the 22nd - 24th May, 6 Year 10 students completed their Silver Expedition by navigating and camping for 3 days and 2 nights!

Each day, the students demonstrated positivity and an eager desire to explore the outdoors.

Their Duke of Edinburgh assessor was blown away by how the students conducted themselves and described them as a true credit to Royds Hall.

Well done!

Yorkshire Speak Out Challenge Final 2025

We are extremely delighted that one of our students has been selected as a finalist for the Yorkshire Speak Out Challenge 2025, where they will compete against 15 other students.

Congratulations to Eva Stephenson on this huge achievement. We are all wishing you good luck!

Grim Tales Short Story Competition: A Spellbinding Experience

The English Department recently transformed into a world of wonder for the launch of the Grim Tales Young Writers Short Story Writing Competition.

Pupils were invited to write their own 100-word stories inspired by legends and fairytales, and staff created an unforgettable experience to spark their imaginations. The event featured immersive fantasy backdrops, atmospheric props, fairy lights, candles, celestial music and a series of creative writing tasks, all designed to immerse pupils in the genre.

The English team were delighted by the energy and excitement the pupils brought to the event. Students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, producing over twenty original entries that showcased their creativity and talent. We look forward to sharing their magical stories and celebrating their creative achievements.

World Environmental Day Competition

Students in Wellbeing participated in a competition for World Environmental Day last week, where they had to be a 'Plastic Detective'.

Miss Devane chose the two lucky winners: Rydan Murray and Fatima Azeem. Well done!

They represented Royds Hall exceptionally well and were keen to give each event a go! Well done.

We wish our Year 8 and Year 7 students good luck in their competitions over the coming weeks.
