School Performance: Guys and Dolls

Added: July 17th, 2017

60 students from Royds Hall Community School took to the stage to bring Guys and Dolls to life through acting, dance and song. This magnificent musical was supported for the first time by a live 11 piece professional orchestra and a skilfully designed set created by the schools Design and Technology Department. After three days of intensive rehearsal, we were ready to open the doors to our audience that was a sell out on both nights. The lead roles, Nathan Detroit (played by Iwan Noble), Sky Masterson (Played by Sam Jackson), Sarah Brown (Played by Ailish Farrell) and Adelaide Adams (Played by Taya Dufton) did a superb job of telling the story of how love can overcome many ‘sins’ life may throw at us!

The whole cast took part in well-known numbers such as ‘Sit down your Rocking the Boat’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and  ‘Follow the Fold’. There was an excellent sense of ensemble work particularly within the gangster numbers performed by 20 ‘guys’ in ‘The Old Established’ and ‘Luck be a Lady’. It was empowering to see the ‘guys’ work so collaboratively on stage and were fantastic role models for the younger students to look up to in such a positive light. Every single student involved worked hard and pulled together to create this show. It certainly paid off because as we did not just create a school show but a professional musical theatre production.

A special thanks goes out to Richard Nimmo (Musical Director), James Lewis (Vocal Director), Charlie Hayes (Assistant Director and Technical Manager), Craige Clarke (Lighting Manager) Jonathan Hudson (LBT Technical Support), Lucy Booth (Dance Choreographer), the Arts and Design and Technology Faculty and all the other school staff that supported this show in running smoothly and professionally.

We have already been asked by students ‘what are we doing next year Miss….?’, well you will just have to wait and see but we certainly have set a bench mark!

May I congratulate you, your team and of course the cast for a superb production of Guys and Dolls last night. I can honestly say that it was better than some adult productions I have seen at the LBT. Please pass my congratulations on to all concerned.

I just wanted to say how fantastic the show was last night. We were blown away by the standard of the acting and singing and the whole performance! It was well worth my parents making the trip down from Hartlepool to come and watch, they loved it.

The students are so, so lucky to have such enthusiastic and encouraging teachers! Cannot wait for next year’s performance now!

A HUGE well done for last night! I really was impressed – particularly the singing. I found it to be a real strength of the performance.

It was great to work with you and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the production. Please pass on my congratulations to the cast on their excellent performances.

Many congratulations and a HUGE thank you for a stellar performance of Guys and Dolls! We can’t wait to see what you come up with next year!
