Royds Hall Squash

Since September 2014 we have had a really big push on developing the game of Squash within PE. As well as covering the sport in PE lessons we also have a club on a Thursday night lead by Malcolm Pickup. Malcolm is a well-respected coach from the local Squash circuit and he has worked hard to develop the students’ skills and enjoyment of the game. He has a group of 12 students who attend week in week out to learn more about the game.

The team had their first fixture recently against Huddersfield Grammar and it was great to see the improvement of our students since they started. It was a really enjoyable evening and our students secured a number of wins. Well done!

Girls extra-curricular PE

Within PE this year a key focus has been to increase the number of girls actively involved in extra-curricular sport. To support this we have introduced girls only lunchtime activity days which has had a significant impact upon numbers involved. Every Wednesday there are between 50 and 60 girls playing badminton and taking part in trampolining. This is further supported by a girl’s only fitness club which is well attended.

We have also continued to develop our sporting links with Huddersfield Grammar School through running a Girls Football Club on a Friday after school. When we started in September we had around 10 girls attending but, this has risen to 29 girls’ each week with a focus on them developing their skills and love of the game. It is hoped we can continue to develop these links further in the future developing form the successful foundations already developed across a range of sports.
