World Book Day 2014

Added: March 7th, 2014

Thursday 6th March was World Book Day and staff and students at Royds Hall Community School celebrated in style!

Mrs Kaye organised a competition that launched at the beginning of the week where students had to match front covers of famous books with their opening lines; the twist in the tale was that staff were wearing then around their necks! Lots of students got involved and the winners will be announced soon.

Then on actual World Book Day, staff from the English department dressed up as characters from either Alice in Wonderland or Harry Potter. They invited 35 students to a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in the ILC at lunchtime. Fun was had by all as staff and students tucked into an array of delights, including jam tarts, pizzas and various cakes. They all had an extra special treat in the form of a book shaped cake made by Jodie Staples. It was absolutely amazing and tasted wonderful.

The day was made complete by the visit of Gez Walsh, a famous performance poet. He entertained over 300 of our students throughout the day and made a special appearance at the Tea Party where he got MR O’Brien, Miss Rutter, Mr Morton and Miss Rhodes to join him in a bit of ‘Dad dancing’.

So World Book Day is over for another year. But that doesn’t mean that the reading has to stop! Look out for the next Drop Everything and Read event, coming to a classroom near you soon.
